Our story
Snehalata Rane Education Society
During the penultimate decade of British rule in India, missionary schools run by government were the privilege of a few. Dadar, the centre of the city now, was the area of residence for the labour class of Mumbai, and education was highly inaccessible — especially for women.
At a time when India was preparing a decisive fight for independence and the world was thrown into World War II, Mrs. Snehalata Rane took on the herculean task of opening a private school for girls in Dadar. Fighting against all odds, she established Snehalata Rane Girls High School in 1939. The school was allotted a government grant in 1956 and continued its journey successfully.
Management of the school was later taken over by the daughter of Smt. Rane, Smt. Prabha Iyer, and other trustees, who guided the institution until 2000.
As demand grew, the premises proved too small. Mr. Vishnu Shelar, secretary of the education society, arranged additional space in a BMC school premises in Lower Parel in 2005. Coming from a modest background, Mr. Shelar had broken through poverty with hard work and determination. He joined the trust in 2000 and took the school to new heights — expanding into junior college sections of Commerce (un-aided) and Science (self-financed). He continues to work towards an arts stream and a degree college, with a vision of Snehalata Rane Education Society as an apex learning centre of Mumbai.
Snehalata Rane High School and Junior College is scaling new heights with its students, and it will continue to do so in the years to come.
